The event was planned by representatives of the Sisters of Social Service Interfaith Peace Garden in collaboration with the Los Angeles Region Religious Campaign Against Torture and Pax Christi Southern California as well as other sponsoring organizations. This is a local and annual commemoration of Intrnational Peace Day begun by the United Nations in 1983.

Peace making in our world today, globally and locally, calls religious communities, churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and interfaith movements to speak out about the human rights of their members and all peoples. Peace making requires that we do not torture or abuse, that we do not remain silent when this happens, and that we become conscious of alternative efforts toward peace. This evening will address these challenges.

Keynote speaker were Dr. Sarah Sentilles - California State University, Channel Islands. The respondents were Rabbi Jerrold Goldstein - Rabbis for Human Rights, and Dr Maher Hathout - Islamic Center of Southern California. Program were introduced by introduced by Rev. Chris Ponnet, National Council, PAX Christi USA and interfaith prayer led by Rev. Alexei Smith, ecumenical and interreligious officer, Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Opportunities for action and resources were available.
